About Us

The Roots of NRO

Network for Reproductive Options (NRO) was created in July 2002 in response to the closure of the only free-standing abortion clinic in Eugene, Oregon which served the entire lower half of the state and parts of Idaho and Northern California. Since its creation, NRO has held a rally in protest of the closure of the clinic, a community forum informing and addressing the pressing issue of abortion access in the area, and tabled at many of the local street fairs and events. NRO has also presented our self-health slide show to classes at the University of Oregon and APROVECHO Research Center, as well as given presentations about abortion access at Lane Community College. We have been communicating with local health care providers about our services and the urgent need of restoring access.

NRO's most direct form of service to women is our hotline phone. Women and their support people are able to call and speak with a trained advocate about their particular needs and situation. The hotline is used for helping women access NRO's WIN fund and other abortion funds, receive information about abortion and abortion aftercare, as well as help in navigating the healthcare system including Oregon Health Plan.

National Network of Abortion Funds

NRO operates as a non-profit organization under the group exemption number provided by the National Network or Abortion Funds (NNAF). NNAF provides the framework for community-based abortion funds across the United States. NNAF also helps funds create the structure of their organization and strengthens funds through training and access to technology. For example, NRO received a grant from NNAF to hire Tree Bressen a professional facilitator to train the Board of Coordinators in facilitation skills and consensus decision making. NNAF is not only a part of fund building, but also educates the general public and works for the creation of pro-choice policy on a legal level.

NNAF and its affiliated funds believe that:

  • without abortion access, the right to choose in meaningless,
  • abortion is basic healthcare,
  • restrictions placed on abortion are inherently discriminating to low income women, young women, rural women, and women of color.
  • These beliefs led NRO to join NNAF to give and receive support in our efforts to achieve better access to abortion for all women and their communities. NRO is very excited to be a part of such an important organization within the pro-choice movement.

    What is Next? The Plan

We currently live in a time where over 85% of US counties lack an abortion provider. NRO strives to restore access to all women and all communities in as widespread a geographical region as possible, in particular to the women in Central and Southern Oregon. NRO has quite a bit of work cut out for us, and we would like to share with you some of our visions.

    Our upcoming plans include:

  • Identifying the most pressing areas and issues facing women seeking abortion services in the state of Oregon.
  • Making connections with all country health departments and sending letters to them explaining our services to increase our presence in rural communities.
  • Scheduling more slide show and workshop opportunities.
  • Expanding our Resource Room materials.
  • Networking with other women and community centered organizations.
  • NRO is committed to creating a diverse organization on all levels. This is an issue that requires constant work and diligence. If you are interested in volunteering or becoming one of our Board of Coordinators, please contact us.
